Rising Milk Prices in India: An Overview of Efforts and Schemes

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying has reported a continuous increase in the average price of milk over the past five years. Currently, the milk procurement prices for 2025-26 have reached Rs. 49.2 per litre for buffalo milk and Rs. 36.7 per litre for cow milk. This price escalation is attributed to factors regulated by cooperative and private dairies rather than government intervention. However, several national schemes such as the Rashtriya Gokul Mission and the National Programme for Dairy Development are being implemented to enhance milk productivity, improve dairy infrastructure, and increase the incomes of milk producers. The initiative is complemented by financial support from state governments, including subsidies. The rise in prices is seen amidst efforts by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying to introduce measures that bolster productivity and reduce the cost of milk production, ensuring better economic returns for dairy farmers.
