Share

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata has reported significant improvements in the accuracy of their weather forecasts over the past three years. With a focus on severe weather events such as heavy rainfall, heatwaves, thunderstorms, and dense fog, the centre has achieved accuracies of 84%, 95%, 62%, and 90%, respectively. These figures illustrate efforts that meet or exceed national averages in some areas. To further enhance forecasting abilities, RMC Kolkata has expanded its observation network by installing new automatic weather stations and rain gauges. Additionally, they have implemented impact-based forecasting, upgraded logistical support, and introduced a decision support system for better data analysis. Through collaborations with academic institutions and advanced training programs for staff, RMC Kolkata continues to refine its operational forecasts, aiming to better support various sectors such as agriculture, aviation, and disaster management. A total of 334 personnel, including 29 at the Area Cyclone Warning Centre, are dedicated to improving weather forecasting and warnings.
