The Sagarmala Programme, initiated by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, aims to enhance port-led development in India by leveraging the country's extensive coastline and waterways. In Tamil Nadu, various projects have been undertaken, including the construction of berthing facilities, fishing harbours, and skill development programs, with significant financial assistance provided to state governments. The initiative includes 22 projects in Tamil Nadu, with a total project cost of ₹1238 crore, of which 16 projects have been completed. The National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts has also been established to support technological advancements in the sector.
