Shortage of Medical Radioisotopes in India

The Department of Atomic Energy's Board of Radiation & Isotope Technology (BRIT) reported on the domestic production of key medical radioisotopes, revealing that while Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) meets national demand, Iodine-131 (I-131), Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), and Fluorine-18 (F-18) do not. A significant gap exists in the supply of Mo-99 and Lu-177. Future production is expected to increase with a new PPP-based isotope reactor project anticipated to start in 2035. The Tata Memorial Centre is expanding nuclear medicine infrastructure in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to improve access.
