Significant Increase in Cyclone Forecast Accuracy by India Meteorological Department

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has improved cyclone forecast accuracy between 2016-2025, achieving a 20-25% improvement in track prediction and 35-45% improvement in landfall and intensity prediction in recent years. The improvement is due to upgraded observation tools, numerical modeling, and data assimilation techniques. Efforts from Mission Mausam launched in 2025 aim to further enhance weather observations and forecasting systems in India.
