Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 Announced by Indian Government

The Government of India, through its Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has announced the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. These new regulations will come into effect from April 1, 2026, replacing the previous rules of 2016. The updated guidelines focus on improving waste segregation and management, emphasizing the principles of circular economy and extended producer responsibility. Key features include a mandatory four-stream segregation process, increased use of Refuse Derived Fuel in industries, and the implementation of a comprehensive online waste tracking system. Additionally, the rules enforce stricter landfilling restrictions and introduce provisions for environmental compensation under the 'Polluter Pays' principle. The rules are set to be monitored by newly established Central and State-level Committees.
