Status of Adoption of Alternatives to Animal Testing in India
The Department of Biotechnology in India is developing 3D tissue models and in-vitro systems to replace animal testing in drug discovery and toxicology. However, protocols for validating these non-animal alternatives are still lacking, and no national repository for validated methods has been established. While support for research and innovation in non-animal methods is being fostered, current funding guidelines do not mandate their use. BIRAC has funded several projects aimed at developing these technologies, but international collaboration in this area has not yet occurred.
