Indian astrophysicists have revealed new insights on the thermal behavior of Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) during their journey from the Sun to Earth. This study, conducted by researchers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, offers a statistical analysis over three decades, showing how these thermal dynamics affect their potential to cause geomagnetic storms impacting communication infrastructure. The findings suggest that ICMEs are more thermodynamically active than previously thought, with significant heating processes observed, challenging the assumption of cooling as they travel.
