Survey on Microplastics and Marine Debris by Ministry of Earth Sciences

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has conducted extensive surveys from 2022 to 2025 along India's coastline to assess microplastic and marine debris levels. The surveys revealed that riverine inputs and discarded fishing gear are major sources of microplastic pollution. Beach litter assessments indicate a decline in plastic litter from 67% in 2018 to 43% in 2024. Various studies highlight the impact of marine litter on sensitive coastal ecosystems, with community-led cleanup initiatives removing over 150 tons of litter. A National Marine Litter Policy roadmap has been formulated to address these issues.
