Swachh Bharat Mission: Over 11.98 Crore Households Access Sanitary Facilities

The Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), initiated by the Government of India in 2014, aimed to eradicate open defecation by providing access to toilets for all rural households. By October 2019, all Indian states and union territories had declared themselves Open Defecation Free (ODF) after constructing over 10 crore latrines. The second phase of the mission, from 2020 to 2026, focuses on sustaining ODF status and enhancing waste management infrastructure. As of November 2025, around 4.85 lakh villages have achieved the ODF Plus status, with comprehensive waste management systems in place in over 5 lakh villages.
