Researchers from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences uncovered the historical evolution of Kaziranga National Park, home to the one-horned rhinos, by analyzing sediment cores from its wetlands. These studies showed that climate changes, vegetation shifts, and human activity have greatly influenced the park’s ecosystem over millennia. This research highlights how northeastern India's stable climate and lower human population pressures allowed rhinoceroses to thrive in Kaziranga, contrasting with northwestern India where climatic shifts and human activities led to their decline.
