Union Minister Elaborates on Criteria for Specifying Scheduled Tribes
The Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Shri Durgadas Uikey, detailed the criteria used to identify communities as Scheduled Tribes during a session in Rajya Sabha. The criteria include indications of primitive traits, distinctive culture, geographical isolation, shyness of contact with the larger community, and backwardness. The government has outlined modalities for considering proposals for inclusion and exclusion from the Scheduled Tribes list, requiring recommendations and justifications from the concerned State Government or Union Territory Administration, and concurrence from the Registrar General of India and National Commission for Scheduled Tribes.
