Unveiling the Sun's Magnetic Cage: New Insights into Solar Storms
Researchers from the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) have made significant strides in understanding Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), revealing that the Sun's global magnetic field acts as a 'magnetic cage'. This new study employed magnetohydrodynamic simulations to demonstrate the critical role of the Sun’s magnetic field and helicity in solar storms. Not only does a weaker magnetic field allow for easier CME escape, but the rate of helicity buildup also plays a crucial role in predicting eruptions, offering a potentially effective new tool for space weather forecasting.
