Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Manufacturing Faces Implementation Delays
The Ministry of Heavy Industries in India has initiated a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to boost domestic Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery manufacturing, aiming to establish a capacity of 50 GWh with an allocation of ₹18,100 crore. However, as of now, only 1 GWh has been installed by Ola Cell Technologies from the 40 GWh capacity awarded to four firms, with others like Reliance and ACC Energy yet to operationalize their awarded capacities. Challenges include technological gaps, lack of skilled manpower, and reliance on imported machinery. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Mines is taking initiatives to support critical mineral supply and exploration, crucial for battery production, through measures like the National Critical Minerals Mission and incentivizing recycling of critical minerals.
