AI Integration in Indian Judiciary: Opportunities and Challenges

Share

The Indian judiciary is taking significant steps to incorporate artificial intelligence technology to improve efficiency and transparency. Recent amendments to the Information Technology Act, 2000, and new laws from 2023 have strengthened procedures around digital content manipulation and authentication under the eCourts Mission Mode project. This project aims to integrate AI, blockchain, and other advanced technologies into the judicial processes, supported by a budget of Rs 7210 crore. AI tools like Legal Research Analysis Assistant and Digital Courts 2.1 are in pilot stages, tackling legal research and case management tasks. However, challenges such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, and the lack of formal policies remain. These technologies and attempts for their integration were addressed in a recent parliamentary session by the Minister of State for Law and Justice, demonstrating India's drive towards a tech-enabled judicial system.
