Discovery of New Stellar Chemistry in Star A980

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics have discovered a new type of stellar chemistry in the star A980, located 25,800 light years away in the Ophiuchus Constellation. This Extreme Helium star contains an unprecedented amount of germanium, a metallic element never before observed in this class of stars. The findings suggest that A980's unusual chemistry may be linked to its formation from the merger of two white dwarf stars, providing new insights into stellar evolution and the synthesis of heavy elements.
