Government Addresses Concerns over Wheat Procurement in Punjab for RMS 2026-27
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has addressed concerns over wheat procurement and evacuation in Punjab for the Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2026-27, clarifying several points. Despite reports of a glut in Punjab's mandis, wheat arrivals are lower compared to last year, with a reduction of around 3 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT). However, wheat lifting from mandis has improved, with 78.96 LMT already lifted as of May 6, 2026, marking an increase from last year's 75.63 LMT. Enhanced direct delivery planning and allocation of wheat specials to Punjab are also facilitating effective distribution, with 60% of All India wheat specials allocated to Punjab to prevent congestion and ensure smooth operations.
