Government Progresses on Bioenergy Initiatives: Prevents 5.7 Million Tonnes of CO2 Emissions

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has reported significant advancements in bioenergy projects, focusing primarily on biomass co-firing in thermal power plants. This initiative has effectively reduced fossil fuel usage and mitigated carbon emissions by 5.7 million tonnes of CO2 since 2019-20. Despite these successes, challenges persist, including the availability of feedstock and high capital costs per megawatt. To address these issues, the government has launched several supportive measures spanning from financial assistance to infrastructure support, under schemes run by multiple ministries including Agriculture and Petroleum.
