Government Reports Persistence of Untouchability in India

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has acknowledged the continued existence of untouchability in India, as revealed by the National Crimes Record Bureau's 2023 data. Despite legal measures such as the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, 24 cases of untouchability were reported against Scheduled Castes and Tribes. The government continues to push for strict implementation of these laws and regularly advises state governments and union territories to enforce anti-caste discrimination measures effectively. However, a significant number of cases remain pending in court, highlighting ongoing challenges in eradicating untouchability.
