ICG Intensifies Operations as Burning Container Vessel Drifts Off Kerala Coast

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is intensifying operations to manage the burning Singaporean container vessel MV Wan Hai 503, which caught fire off the Kerala coast on June 9, 2025. The vessel, carrying 1.2 lakh metric tons of fuel and hazardous cargo, poses a significant risk to the marine environment. Firefighting efforts have reduced visible flames, but the fire remains active in the inner decks. Multiple ICG ships and aircraft are involved in the operation, with additional support requested from the Indian Air Force. Efforts to tow the vessel away from the coast are ongoing to prevent an ecological disaster.
