India Enhances Legal Framework to Combat Online Child Abuse
The Indian government has fortified its legal frameworks with amendments to the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021, aimed at addressing risks from deepfakes and online child sexual abuse material. Under the POCSO Act, 2012, and the newly advanced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the protection of children from sexual exploitation both online and offline is prioritized. Amendments lower response times for removing offensive content and Institute stringent punishments for sexual offenses against minors. The fast-tracked special courts have been effective in handling thousands of child abuse cases.
