Oil Slick Detected after Liberian Vessel Sinks off Kerala Coast

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) initiated a pollution response operation after the Liberian container vessel MV MSC ELSA 3 sank off the Kerala coast on May 25, 2025. An oil slick was detected shortly after the sinking, prompting immediate deployment of ICG resources, including aerial assessments and dispersal of Oil Spill Dispersant (OSD). Despite challenging conditions, ICG continued operations to mitigate the spill and ensure maritime safety. The Mercantile Marine Department issued a pollution liability warning to the vessel owners, and local authorities were advised to prepare for shoreline clean-up efforts.
