RBI Mandates Use of Regional Languages for Better Banking Services

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released new guidelines requiring banks to provide customer services in regional languages to enhance the effectiveness of their service delivery. The guidelines advise banks to prepare board-approved policies for branch management, which include using trilingual materials—Hindi, English, and the regional language for all customer-facing documents. Public Sector Banks (PSBs) are also instructed to recruit Local Bank Officers who are proficient in regional languages to ensure more efficient communication with local customers, especially in rural and semi-urban branches. This will foster seamless communication and improve customer service across multiple regions.
