Revised Greenbelt Standards for Indian Industries

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in India has revised its greenbelt/green cover requirements for industrial areas to better address pollution potentials. Now, industrial estates are required to have a minimum of 10% of their area as a common green area. Red and orange category industrial units within estates must maintain 15% and 10% greenbelt, respectively, while similar units outside estates are required to maintain 25% and 20%, which can be reduced by 5% if they are not primarily air-polluting industries. Green and white category industries have more lenient requirements unless they have an air pollution score ≥25. These changes, effective since the guideline dated October 29, 2025, aim to optimize land use while enhancing environmental sustainability.
