Voluntary Silver Hallmarking to Begin in 2025
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has announced that Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID)-based hallmarking for silver jewellery will be introduced on a voluntary basis starting September 1, 2025. This initiative aims to empower consumers to verify the purity of silver articles, enhancing traceability and aligning with existing gold hallmarking systems. The revised standard, IS 2112:2025, introduces seven purity grades and allows consumers to access detailed information about their purchases through the BIS Care App. Awareness campaigns are being conducted to inform stakeholders about this transition.
