AI-Enhanced Weather Forecasting Boosts Indian Farmers' Planning

The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare in India has launched AI-based initiatives to assist farmers with accurate monsoon onset forecasts for the Kharif 2025 season, impacting agricultural practices in 13 states. Using a combined model of NeuralGCM and ECMWF’s AI Forecasting System, alongside 125 years of IMD rainfall data, forecasters provided local monsoon onset predictions to over 38 million farmers via the M-Kisan portal in five regional languages. Feedback indicates significant planting decisions were adjusted based on these forecasts. Additionally, AI-driven tools like the 'Kisan e-Mitra' chatbot and the National Pest Surveillance System are enhancing information access and crop health monitoring for better resource management and productivity.
